Vinzavod Assenovgrad is a former wine cooperative located in Assenovgrad, outside of the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. In 2001, Mr. Torstenson was tasked to raise the level of knowledge at the then newly privatized facility and to develop a new premium segment for its products.

In a very short period of time, a small-sized wine cellar was built and the staff was trained in modern vineyard work, with a clear plan for thinning, fertilizing and plant health treatment. Starting from the time of the harvest, the staff was also trained in modern winemaking and in how to use oak in the ageing of the wine.

The vineyard’s new selection of premium wines was introduced to the market following the first harvest and made their way to the podium when an international jury led by Ms. Jancis Robinson visited Bulgaria a few years later to judge the country’s top wines.

Having accomplished his mission, Mr. Torstenson’s ended his cooperation with Vinzavod Assenovgrad in 2005.
